Pandora's mission station is "to enrich people's lives by enabling them to enjoy music they know and discover music they'll love, anytime, anywhere. People connect with music on a fundamentally personal and deeply emotional level. Whether it's a song someone first heard ten years ago or one they've discovered, if they connect with that music on our service, a strong bond is forged at that moment with Pandora. Just as we value music, we hold a deep respect for those who create it. We celebrate and hold dear the individuals who have chosen to make music, from megastars to talented new and emerging artists.
Pandora is the leader in internet radio in the United States, offering a personalized experience for each of their listeners. Unlike traditional radio stations that broadcast the same content at the same time to all of their listeners, they enable each of their listeners to create up to 100 personalized stations. The Music Genome Project powers their ability to predict listener music preferences, play music content suited to the tastes of each individual listener and introduce listeners to music they will love. When a listener enters a single song, artist or genre to start a station the Pandora service instantly generates a station that plays music they think that listener will enjoy. Based on listener reactions to the songs they pick with a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”, they further tailor the station to match the listener's preferences.
The Pandora Radio service is currently provided through two models.
-
Free Service: Their free service is advertising-based and allows listeners access to their music and personalized playlist generating system for free across all of their delivery platforms. Users can listen to 320 hours of free content per month, then if that cap is reached a $0.99 fee is required to keep listening that month.
-
Pandora One: Pandora One is a paid service where consumers may purchase annual or monthly subscriptions for $36 per year or approximately $4 per month. Pandora One eliminates all external advertising from any device used to access their service. Pandora One allows unlimited listening time and provides access to higher quality audio on supported devices.
Beyond song delivery, listeners can discover more about the music they hear by researching song lyrics, reading the history of their favorite artists, viewing artist photos and buying albums and songs from Amazon or iTunes. Their service also incorporates community social networking features. Listeners can create and customize personal listener profile pages to connect with other listeners. Their music feed feature enables listeners to view the music that their social connections are listening to and provide and receive recommendations for songs, albums and artists. Listeners can also share their stations across other social media outlets and through email by using their share feature or by distributing individualized station URLs.
In addition to streaming their service to traditional computers, they have developed Pandora mobile device apps for smartphones such as Android, Blackberry and the iPhone, and for tablets including the iPad, Android tablets, and Amazon Kindle Fire tablets. Pandora is now available on more than 1,000 integrations, including automobiles, automotive aftermarket devices and consumer electronic devices.
Globalization: Pandora is available for consumers in the United States, New Zealand, and Australia.
Integration: There is no conglomeration, horizontal integration, vertical integration, or media synergy because Pandora Media is a single company that is not combined with any other companies.

My assessment: Pandora is doing fairly well, their revenue has gone up considerably every year for the last 5 years. Revenue is consistent since it is based primarily off of advertising, and with the increasing number of formats that Pandora is becoming available on, I believe their revenue will continue to increase.
